Another Beef Empire Days is in the books and Garden City, Kan., can again rest assured that the livestock industry, a vital part of Kansas’ economy, is alive and well. Cattle feeders, along with suppliers and supporters, participated in a variety of events centered on the production of beef in the High Plains.

Awards for the Live Cattle Show, sponsored by Schering-Plough Animal Health, included Champion Live Steer fed by Danner Chi Angus and owned by Drummond Bros. Midwest Feeders Inc. entered the second place live steer. The Champion Live Show Heifer was owned by Hitch Agri-Business and fed by Henry C. Hitch Feedlot. Supreme Cattle Feeders LLC took second place in the heifer division.

The Champion Carcass Steer and overall Champion Carcass awards went to Lakin Feed Yard by Turner. The Reserve Champion Steer carcass was fed and owned by Triangle H Cattle Co.

The Pfizer Animal Health-MGA Champion Heifer carcass award went to Irsik & Doll Feedyard and was owned by Brian Little. Reserve Champion Heifer Carcass was fed by –77 Feed Yard and owned by Schurrtop Angus & Charolais.

The Overall Grand Champion steer and heifer were determined based on a combination of performance in both the live and carcass shows. The Overall Grand Champion Steer award went to a steer fed and owned by Lane County Feeders. The Overall Grand Champion Heifer was also fed and owned by Lane County. The Earl C. Brookover Memorial award also went to the Lane County heifer. The Feedlot Special Feature Grand Champion Award was presented to Henry C. Hitch Feedlot Inc. and reserve went to Triangle H. Grain and Cattle.
